Sailboat winches need to have maintenance done on them yearly.  I think it’s safe to say most of us don’t take our winches apart, clean and grease them yearly.  If you’re like me…you’d like to but don’t have a clue how to go about it.

Last night I took a class at our yacht club on winch maintenance.  Yeah, our club is definitely a blue collar club.  Down the street they’d have umbrella drinks while someone else did the maintenance on their winches.  It was a great class taught by a club member, thanks Allen.  He had great information and I’ll be working on ours soon.  Yep, I’ll take lots of pictures and post it when I’m done.

However, he gave us a link to the  C&C Resource Center and I wanted to pass it along to all of you who’d like to see what’s inside your winches.  They have ‘blown apart’ or ‘exploded’ drawings of:

  • Barient
  • Barlow
  • Lewmar

So if you’re interested click on the above link.

I’ll post up a detailed list for you with lots of pictures after I do ours.  I’ll try to get to it soon.  We’ve had our boat for five years and haven’t done ours yet.  I understand that they can improve by 50% if you clean, grease and oil them.  So, as soon as I can, I’ll get to work on our sailboat winches.
